ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರ ಪಟ್ಟಣವು ಗದಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಶಿರಹಟ್ಟಿ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಟ್ಟಣ ಹಾಗೂ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಪಟ್ಣಣವು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾದ ಗದಗದಿಂದ38 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆ 2011 ರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ 38.826 ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಎಲವಗಿ ರೈಲು ನಿಲ್ದಾಣ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರದಿಂದ 12 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ. ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರ ಪುರಸಭೆ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ 23 ವಾರ್ಡಗಳಿವೆ.
ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರ ಪಟ್ಟಣಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾದಾಮಿ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಾದಿತ್ಯನ (ಕ್ರಿ. ಶ 686 ರ) ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಊರನ್ನು ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಪಟ್ಟಣ 120 ಮಹಾಜನರಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮೇಶ್ವರಗಿರಿ ಘಟಕಸ್ಥಾನ ಎಂದು ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಾಗೂ ಇದೂಂದು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಜೈನ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಆದಿ ಕವಿ ಪಂಪನಿಂದ ಮೊದಲಗೊಂಡು ಹಲವಾರು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕವಿಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪರಿಪಕ್ವವಾದ ಶುದ್ಧ ಕನ್ನಡ (ತಿರುಳ್ಗನ್ನಡ) ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳವೆಂದು ಇದನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸಿರುವರು. ಇದನ್ನು ಪುಲಿಗೇರಿ, ಹುಲಿಗೇರಿ, ಪುರಿಗೇರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಪುಲಿಕರ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ “ಶ್ರೀ. ಸೋಮೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ” ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ‘ಅಮರಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ಜಕಣಾಚಾರಿ’ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದು ಎಂಬ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಲಕ್ಷಣ ಅಥವಾ ಲಕ್ಮರಸನೆಂಬವನು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಣೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ರೀತಿ ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕಾರಣ ಕಾಲಾನುಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿರುವುದು ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದ

Tontadarya Matha of Veerashaiva sect of Hindus is doing a lot of educational and Literary activities in and around Gadag and also St.Johns Church. Gadag contribution in the field of music & sports is immense Pt. Bhim sen Joshi, hails from this place only. It is matter of great pride. A nearby village Kanaginahal has made its name throughout India by establishing cooperative sector. Today all over India is celebrating his century.

Laxmeshwar is one of the main town which comes in shirahatti taluk, Gadag district. It is one of the pilgrimage centre. Laxmeshwar town was called as Puligere, Huligere, Purigere, or Pulikar Nagra. “Shri. Someshwar Temple” is one of the famous historical temple in Laxmeshwar.
